Grief Support Groups

Grief Support Services are offered in various settings through the region. Private Counselors, Hospices, Churches, and Community Organizations may offer such services. The following listing is not exhaustive; however, it may provide direction to support healing. At the end of this resource listing, websites for online grief support as well as virtual community support groups are included.

McAlister-Smith Goose Creek

Grief Support Group meets the 1st Tuesday of each month from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at the McAlister- Smith Goose Creek Location. Please call Chaplain Tim at 843-553-2503.

 

McAlister-Smith-Mount Pleasant

Grief Support Groups for Parents

 

Bereaved Parents of the USA (BPUSA) Meetings are held at the North Charleston City Hall. Please call 843-875-1148 or 843-870-9020.

 

Compassionate Friends is a nationwide organization with chapters throughout the country. They focus on support for parents, grandparents and adult siblings after the death of a child. The Summerville and Charleston chapters disbanded during the pandemic. Additional resource information about the organization may be found at https://www.compassionatefriends.org/ook.com.

 

Charleston GRASP (Grief Recovery after a Substance Passing) www.grasphelp.org There are 2 meeting locations:

 

The West Ashley group meets at 6 m on the 1st Tuesday of each month at Seacoast West Ashley (2049 Savannah Highway)

Tender Memories Perinatal Loss Support Group helps men and women deal with grief and depression they feel after losing a pregnancy. This free group, led by obstetric nurses trained in pregnancy bereavement issues, meets the second and fourth Monday of each month, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Prenatal Wellness Center, 135 Cannon Street, Suite 202, in Charleston, SC. The Family Day Camp- Families in our Stepping Stones Program gather to share a meal, celebrate progress, learn additional coping skills, connect with peer families, and have fun. Siblings, extended family & anyone that is part of the participating child’s support network is welcome to attend.

 

The Sand Dollar Club -an in-school grief support group for elementary and middle school students in the Charleston County area. Bridges’ facilitators work with school partners to provide a 12-week grief program. The facilitators meet weekly with groups of 4-6 students in the schools to discuss grief and their emotions surrounding the loss of a loved one, develop coping skills, foster peer support, and build self-esteem and resilience. www.healgrief.com  For those aged 18-25, it is reported that 1 out of 3 young adults are actively grieving. Healgrief, a 501c3 organization, provides resource information, an app for messaging, as well as facilitated virtual support groups that are moderated by professionals. In light of COVID-19, the age limit has been adjusted to 18-30 year olds.

 

www.griefnet.org This internet community of persons dealing with grief, death, trauma and major loss has over 50 email support groups for specific grief situations.

www.opentohope.com is an online community offering inspirational stories of loss, hope, and recovery. Their mission is centered in the belief that hope is the bridge between loss and recovery. The website provides Open to Hope articles, Open to Hope podcasts, Open to Hope TV episodes, Open to Hope book information and Open to Hope author information.

 

www.aftertalk.com AfterTalk is an online grief support site offering interactive tools and blogs to assist with the grieving process. Helpful resources include media—books, articles, DVDs and other web sites—to personal attention from the most compassionate and insightful grief counselors known. Also, introductions to practical "life matters" advisors, who can help navigate what might be unfamiliar new paths—how finances and estate matters change after a loss, how to adjust to a new social situation.
